Full disclosure, I haven't finished the ENTIRE book cover-to-cover。 However, I've read about 70% of it, which probably amounts to about thirty hours of reading time in total。 This book is massive and chock-full of incredibly useful information, including up-to-date contact information and resources for all kinds of things。 It's amazing。 This might be the best $20 I've spent on a book。。。 Full disclosure, I haven't finished the ENTIRE book cover-to-cover。 However, I've read about 70% of it, which probably amounts to about thirty hours of reading time in total。 This book is massive and chock-full of incredibly useful information, including up-to-date contact information and resources for all kinds of things。 It's amazing。 This might be the best $20 I've spent on a book。。。 。。。more

Not a book to read cover to cover, unless you’re living off grid and need to know how to。。。 do anything。 Massively comprehensive book on essentials, survival, growing food, raising animals, having babies (!!!), making candles, shelter。。。 everything。

Tons and tons of content。 Wonderful reminder of just how much you need to know and think about to run a homestead/ farm。 I admittedly did not read the thing cover to cover, but luckily the table of contents included at the beginning of each chapter make finding the subject you need a breeze!

Great resource book with a little bit of everything you need to know to about “country” living。 I marked it as read today although i have had it in “hard print” for while, when i got bored self isolating and pulled it put to make something I was unsure if how to do。 This book has a permanent place on my bookshelf。

This book was on my bookshelf in 1977 and I used it when we were homesteading。 I still refer to it when I'm making jam or yogurt or cheese 。 。 。 it has a bit of everything in it。 This book was on my bookshelf in 1977 and I used it when we were homesteading。 I still refer to it when I'm making jam or yogurt or cheese 。 。 。 it has a bit of everything in it。 。。。more

Flipped through -- this tome is 900+ pages! As far as a reference book to keep on hand, it seems invaluable if you really do have a "country living" situation, with its abilities to have farm animals and significant growing areas。 For myself, I think I'd like to try a small kitchen garden and go from there。 :) Flipped through -- this tome is 900+ pages! Essential reading for anyone living in the country。 When the power goes off and your internet is down (or you have no access to the internet) this book can save your life, save your livestock and save your garden。

I love, love, love this book! Carla is a lady I would have really enjoyed meeting because she just seems like such an all-around amazing person。 She worked hard while homeschooling her children, and they all learned so much in the process。 Her knowledge of the homesteading lifestyle are encompassed in this giant, 5-pound book。 Just about anything you could ever want to know about country living is covered。

loved this book the older editions were more entertaining but the newer have more information。

This book is huge and has a little bit of everything。 I didn't finish it。 It is a book to have on your shelf for constant reference as the farm grows。 I will be adding it to my library as it is a must have。 There is everything from detailed gardening to how to make egg noodles。 This book is huge and has a little bit of everything。 I didn't finish it。 It is a book to have on your shelf for constant reference as the farm grows。 I will be adding it to my library as it is a must have。 There is everything from detailed gardening to how to make egg noodles。 。。。more

This is obviously an amazing reference book and something anyone interested in a self sufficient lifestyle should buy。 However, it does need to be updated as many of the references, websites, and companies they mention either don't exist or you can't find them。 And since Emery has passed away, I wonder if it will get the overhaul that it needs。 4 for now。 5 if one of her heirs releases an updated edition。 This is obviously an amazing reference book and something anyone interested in a self sufficient lifestyle should buy。 However, it does need to be updated as many of the references, websites, and companies they mention either don't exist or you can't find them。 And since Emery has passed away, I wonder if it will get the overhaul that it needs。 4 for now。 5 if one of her heirs releases an updated edition。 。。。more

A valuable addition to a self-sufficiency/gardening/barnyard/do-it-all library。 The new version, The Encyclopedia of Country Living, 40th Anniversary Edition: The Original Manual of Living Off the Land & Doing It Yourself, has a place of honor in mine。 I purchased it after I read this older edition borrowed from my local library。

Out of all the homesteading books I've read, this one is definitely the most detailed。 I also love that it's detailed in a way where the information is necessary, not just fluff。 Out of all the homesteading books I've read, this one is definitely the most detailed。 I also love that it's detailed in a way where the information is necessary, not just fluff。 。。。more

I didn't actually read this, as it's a 900 page reference book 。 But I dipped in to look up what I was interested in and read the entire introduction。 It struck me that many of these instructions are about matters that you really must learn firsthand from an experienced person 。 For instance, she gives you two pages on dressing out an elk, but if you have never done this you shouldn't do it from a two-page instruction-- or rather, you shouldn't eat the meat if you did it from printed materials。 I didn't actually read this, as it's a 900 page reference book 。 But I dipped in to look up what I was interested in and read the entire introduction。 It struck me that many of these instructions are about matters that you really must learn firsthand from an experienced person 。 For instance, she gives you two pages on dressing out an elk, but if you have never done this you shouldn't do it from a two-page instruction-- or rather, you shouldn't eat the meat if you did it from printed materials。 The humor was a little too Hee-Haw for me。 Also, it would be a strange kind of country, simple, off the grid living where you could be online as often as she sends you online。 。。。more

This book is an invaluable resource。 It is the go-to for self-sufficiency。 Even though it is really a reference book, I read it cover to cover and felt like I knew the author, Carla Emery, by the end of it。 I refer to it when I need to, but I'll never loan it out。 I love this book。 This book is an invaluable resource。 It is the go-to for self-sufficiency。 Even though it is really a reference book, I read it cover to cover and felt like I knew the author, Carla Emery, by the end of it。 I refer to it when I need to, but I'll never loan it out。 I love this book。 。。。more

Everything you wanted to know about being self-sufficient!

If I'm ever in a situation like the one depicted in "The Road," I'd choose this book (and maybe a Bible+Qur'an for good measure)。 Almost everything you want to know about homesteading, running a farm, handicrafts, housekeeping, animal husbandry, and seed saving is covered in cursory detail — with plenty of book recommendations and source material for further reading。 If I'm ever in a situation like the one depicted in "The Road," I'd choose this book (and maybe a Bible+Qur'an for good measure)。 Almost everything you want to know about homesteading, running a farm, handicrafts, housekeeping, animal husbandry, and seed saving is covered in cursory detail — with plenty of book recommendations and source material for further reading。 。。。more
